Buying New Cars

Many people prefer buying new cars over used autos. The nice thing about buying a new car is that you can get the exact model and options you want; it is under warranty so you don’t need to worry about repair costs, and it has never been owned by anyone else.

New cars have no previous owner “history” that you need to worry about. You don’t need to concern yourself about whether a new car has been maintained properly, had any damage or driven with care. The thing I like best about new cars is that “new car smell”, which is something that you only get when you buy a new car or fairly new used car.

There are a couple of ways to buy a new car - directly from a dealership or by using the internet to negotiate your purchase online.

Buying a New Car from a Dealer

When buying new cars, most people visit several local dealerships to review different models, check out prices and test drive those they’re interested in. This is a very time consuming process and super-stressful because you have to deal with high-pressure salesmen. I’ve bought enough cars from dealers to know that despite how “nice” the sales person is, he never has your best interest at heart.

The new car salesman has one goal in mind: to make as much money off of you as possible!

A friend of mine who is in the car business once told me that a common phrase heard among salespeople at her dealership is “Send me another stupid customer”! I find this appalling, but unfortunately it’s probably true at any new car dealership you visit.

New car salespeople (and used car salesmen) know all the tricks to persuade you into thinking you’re getting a great deal when buying new cars and how to totally confuse you when it comes time to finance a new car. Normally, we consumers just “give in” due to the mental exhaustion caused by all this dealer “hoo doo” and take the deal just to get the process over with and go home.

I’ve been through this process enough times to have a personal motto that applies to car dealers as well as anyone else in sales:

“Never Trust a Salesman”!

Using the Internet to Help You Buy a New Car Online

Fortunately, thanks to the internet – we can now arm ourselves with all the new car information, price comparisons and financing options we need in order to give us an edge before going to a dealer. We can even complete the whole negotiation process online before even looking at a salesman in person. There are a lot of great websites that have all the tools we need to perform a new car search, and do every bit of needed research quickly and easily online.

By doing all the prep work online prior to buying new cars, we can arm ourselves with the knowledge that salesmen don’t expect us to have. This saves time, money and aggravation!

A knowledgeable consumer is a powerful consumer, and the internet will provide you with all the power and knowledge you need to get the very best deal on a new car, including financing and insurance. All you need to provide is a little time and patience.

Two Approaches to Buying New Cars Online

1 - Complete the Entire New Car Purchase Online

When buying new cars online, you can finance a new car and complete the whole deal from negotiation to sale, visiting the dealer only to “pick up” your new car. In some cases, you can even have your new car delivered right to your house!

Many auto manufacturers will allow you to build your new car online and “buy direct”, which saves money because it takes the “middle man” high dealer commission out of the picture. The only disadvantage to this is that you won’t have a chance to test drive the new car before you buy. You can always go to a dealer and test drive a similar car beforehand though.

2 – Pre-Negotiate Your New Car Deal Online

If you like, you can take a different approach and use online tools and resources to find your new car, find the correct trade in value, locate the car you want from local dealer inventories and know the top price you should pay.

Solicit bids from local dealers and then visit the dealers who are willing to offer you the best price. Test drive your car and make the deal without any high-pressure negotiating and “slick talk” from the salesman.

Finance a New Car and Buy Car Insurance Online to Save Money

You can even get pre approved for new car financing online as well as get insurance quotes. If “gap insurance” is needed (if you will owe more than what the car is worth), you can even get this online and save the added cost you will pay to the dealer for this.

New car dealers make money on financing, and also on Gap Insurance and Extended Warranties . These are all things you can get for yourself online, before you go to the dealer. If you need to finance a new car, you can save hundreds more dollars by pre-qualifying for an auto loan beforehand, and by purchasing your own Gap Insurance if needed.
